John started shooting in 1965 in a league program sponsored by his employer Sperry-Univac.  He remained active for twenty-seven years, holding positions of Secretary-Treasure, Vice-President, and President, as well as serving as the Chairman of instruction for seven years.

His greatest success as an instructor was leading a squad of complete novices from confusion first to competence and then on to a league championship.  In the same period he was a volunteer instructor in the Metro Gun Club "Learn to Shoot" program for five years.

John began shooting registered trap in 1974. After seven years as MTA Director from the Central Zone, he served two terms as MTA Vice-President, then two terms as President.  In these capacities he classified at countless local and zone shoots and the state shoots of Minnesota, Iowa, and South Dakota.  With his wife, Elaine, he planned the Ladies Luncheon at the State Shoot for seven years.

John has registered 183,000 ATA targets.  His success is symbolized by the 130 ATA and league trophies he donated to the Minnesota High School Championships.  As well as shooting the Minnesota State Shoot since 1974, he has attended the Iowa's shoot for 15 years, the Spring Grand 10 years, as well as the Grand American and the Midwest , Southern, and Dixie satellite Grand's.
