Carver (left) and Bogardus (right) in Des Moines, Iowa after
Carver beat Bogardus 100-97 in their 9th match.

Let's do a little calculation on the money involved in this competition.

Both Carver and Bogardus agreed to take the total money (not including the $100.00 for each score of 82 or better) of $7500.00 (25 matches x $300.00) and award it to the winner of the 25 matches, winner take all. In today's money, that amounted to over $154,000. Carver won all that money by beating Bogardus 19-3-3.

Doc also broke 82 or better 23 times for $2,300. In today's money that amounted to just about another $51,000. So Doc took home $9,800. (about $205,000 in today's dollars)

Bogardus did not win any of the purse (remember they agreed to shoot winner take all). He did break 82 or better 18 times for $1,800. (about $38,000 in today's dollars)

We have to assume that all expenses of the tournament (housing, transportation, food, shells, guns, etc) were the responsibility of the combatants. Remember, there were no taxes.
